Following up the demonstration of mobile phones used for shopping in German malls in the previous post, this video is from the University of Ljubljana. They have developed a system where a person can keep track on current location in a city and get information about buildings- even without the help of GPS or triangulation of celltowers.

The mobile phone compares images with images which are stored os a server and the images from the camera phones are matched with the locations provided by the server. Now information of a matched building can be sent to the telephone.

The technology is interesting, but in some sense it seems like solving a problem which is already “solved” with GPS. People who won’t have GPS-phones in the future will probably not bother to use the matching technology of the Hyper Reality either. The work to photograph entire cities will have to be on the same scale as Google Streetview.
